Appreciation post: the old guy who trained me on a Bridgeport said to never trust the DRO, and after 22 years I finally get why
When I started in 2002 at a shop in Dayton, my trainer Ray made me dial in every part by hand for my first three months before he let me touch the readout. I thought he was just being a hardass, but last week a job came through with a DRO that was reading .008 off on the X axis and nobody caught it because everyone just punches numbers and runs. Ray's point was that the readout is a shortcut, not a replacement for knowing what the machine is actually doing. I still check my first part against a dial indicator on anything with a tolerance tighter than .005, and it's saved me at least four scrap piles this year alone. Any of you old timers still running glass scales or do you trust the new encoders on everything?
