Paper tape vs digital readout, I switched back after 8 years

I ran a Bridgeport with DRO for almost a decade, then got a job at a shop where the old machines just had paper tape and scales. First week I nearly scrapped a part because I trusted the numbers over my eyes. I stuck with it for 6 months and learned to read the wear marks on the ways like a map, but when I went back to DRO it felt like cheating. Has anyone else gone backwards on tech and found it made them sharper, or was it just a waste of time?

Man, that's a lot of soul searching over a tool that just tells you where the cutter is. Sounds like you're giving way too much credit to a piece of metal for your own skill, which is cool, but maybe you just needed a new hobby.
