Watched a barista weigh beans at a diner in Cleveland, now I eye my scoop
I used to think weighing coffee was overkill, just some snob thing for people with too much time. But last Saturday I stopped at this tiny diner off I-90 and the old guy running the place pulled out a $12 scale before every single batch. He told me the same scoop could be off by 4 or 5 grams depending on how the beans settled, and that changes the taste more than any fancy roast. I tried it at home with my regular drip machine, same brand of beans, and the difference was honestly obvious. First cup was bitter and weak, second was smooth and had actual sweetness. Now I weigh every morning, takes like 15 extra seconds. Anyone else have that moment where a cheap tool beat your stubborn habit? What made you switch?.

A 4 gram swing from scooping seems like a stretch unless you're packing it down like brown sugar. Weighing is fine but calling it the difference between bitter and sweet makes me wonder if the beans just went stale between cups.
