Am I the only one who thinks the Death of Superman story is way overrated?
My comic shop owner in Pittsburgh sold me the full run for $60 three years ago and I finally read them this weekend, and the whole thing felt like a drawn-out gimmick that didn't earn the hype, has anyone else been let down by a classic storyline everyone loves?

Yeah I totally get that. I had a similar thing with Watchmen, everyone hyped it up as this mind blowing classic but when I finally read it I was like wait, that's it? It felt like a lot of setup for a payoff that didn't really land for me. Sometimes the magic of a story is lost when you come to it years later after all the cultural references have already spoiled the big moments. But then again, I've also had the opposite experience where something everyone hated clicked for me, so it's really just about timing and personal taste I guess.

Man, I gotta push back on that one @miles825. The Death of Superman hit different for people who were actually buying comics off the rack back then. It was this huge event that made news outside of comic shops, and the emotional weight came from seeing a character we'd followed for years actually lose. I get that it reads like a gimmick now, but the funeral issues and the slow build to his return gave it more depth than people give credit for. The whole thing was about legacy and what Superman meant to the world, not just the fight with Doomsday.
