My $40 off-brand weight belt outworks the $200 one I got certified with

Got my HAZMAT ticket last month in Long Beach and the instructor swore by a fancy belt that ran me $200. Used it for two weeks, the weights kept sliding on the webbing and the buckle dug into my hip on every descent. Last week I grabbed a generic rubber belt off the rack at a dive shop in San Pedro for $40 and it grips my lead so tight I forgot it was on after 30 minutes. Am I the only one who thinks the price tag on gear has nothing to do with how it performs in cold murky water?

Hell yeah, and honestly nobody talks about how the real cost is in maintenance and replacement. That pricey belt probably has fancy stitching that rots out, but the cheap rubber one just shrugs off the salt and grime. I'd rather spend the extra cash on tanks and fills than a logo on my waist.
