Ran into a sat diver in Galveston who said he budgets $2k a year on boots alone
Honestly I laughed at first, but he pulled out a spreadsheet on his phone showing 11 pairs over 3 years. He said diving in the Gulf with all the mud and rig work eats through soles way faster than people think, plus he rotates pairs so they dry out between hitches. He also said cheap boots end up costing more because a blowout mid-job means downtime or borrowing someone's nasty spares. Ngl it made me rethink my own kit budget since I've been limping along on one pair for 14 months. Anyone else track their gear spending like that, or am I about to go down a weird rabbit hole?
