My kitchen floor in Vancouver had a weird dip, so I tried a different underlayment

I was installing vinyl plank in a 1970s kitchen last month and the subfloor had a low spot about the size of a dinner plate. Instead of using the standard foam underlay, I grabbed a bag of self-leveling compound from the job site (Ardex Feather Finish, to be exact) and filled just that one spot. It dried in an hour, and the floor went down perfectly flat with no hollow sounds. Has anyone else patched a subfloor like this instead of trying to shim the whole thing?

Bought a fancy digital thermometer from a brand I saw on TV and it died after two cooks

Spent $85 on a ThermoPro digital probe that was supposed to be the best. The screen just went blank halfway through a 14-hour brisket smoke in my backyard. Had to finish the cook blind and it was super stressful. Anyone know a more reliable brand that can handle the heat?

My landlord tried to keep my entire $1200 deposit over a scuff on the wall

I sent him a photo of the move-in sheet proving it was there already, and he backed down in an hour. Has anyone else had to fight a deposit claim like that?

Rant: I watched a house in my old Ottawa neighborhood sell for double in under five years

I grew up in a normal street in Nepean. A house three doors down from my parents sold in 2019 for $480,000. It was a solid three-bedroom, nothing fancy. The family that bought it did some work, like a new kitchen and bathroom, but nothing huge. I drove by last month and saw the sold sign. My mom told me it went for $925,000. That's in less than five years. The work they did might have added $50k in value, max. The rest is just the market going nuts. It hit me that the people who bought it in 2019 basically won a lottery just by being able to get in then. Now, a young couple starting out has no shot at that street. What's a fair price for a starter home anymore if a basic house can do that?

Stopped by the old shop on Elm Street and the paint booth is gone

Honestly, I went by the place I worked at back in '08 and they turned the whole paint area into a spot for detailing. Tbh it made me think about how much the work has changed from full resprays to mostly fixing small dings and blending. Ngl, does your shop still run a full booth or have you moved to something else?

Shoutout to the cheap plastic spudger from that tool kit I bought in 2019

I used to be a metal pick purist for separating glued LCD screens, thinking plastic was for amateurs. After cracking a Fuji X-T20 display, I switched to that flimsy spudger and haven't looked back. Anyone else find their 'junk' tool became their go-to?
