Pro tip: double check grounding on used server racks

Tbh, this older tech at my shop in Portland told me to always re-ground any rack that came out of a demo site. I thought he was being paranoid, so I skipped it on a used 42U I installed for a client. Three weeks later, a drive cage shorted and took out two SSDs in the same bank. The builder had cut the ground strap during decommissioning, nobody caught it until the smoke. Has anyone else had a mislabeled grounding issue from salvage gear or am I just the unlucky one?

Shorted drives usually means you got lucky, not that grounding was the issue.
