Warning: That cheap plastic bull float from the big box store is a total waste of money
I bought one for a small patio job last month thinking it would be fine. By the second pass, the blade was already flexing and leaving waves in the cream. Switched back to my old magnesium float and finished it smooth in half the time. The extra $40 for the good tool makes all the difference on the finish. Anyone have a brand of magnesium float that really holds up?

Oh man, Andrew's got it right. That Marshalltown isn't just a tool that lasts, it's the whole reason the finish turns out right. A cheap float fights you the whole time, flexing and dragging. A good magnesium float just glides on the cream, it becomes an extension of your arm. You stop thinking about the tool and just focus on the slab. That's when you get the real smooth finish, when the tool itself gets out of the way.

Grab a Marshalltown magnesium float, mine's lasted through years of side jobs.

years of side jobs" is the real test. My old float is basically part of the family now.
