I finally asked my mechanic about the 3,000 mile oil change myth

My buddy Mike who runs a shop in Pittsburgh told me five years ago that modern cars can go way longer between changes. I didn't believe him until my owner's manual said 7,500 miles for my 2018 Honda. Has anyone else had a mechanic give advice that goes against what everyone says?

Funny thing is, even mechanics can't agree on this. My buddy at a dealership says they see more sludge from people going 10,000 miles than from late changes. But then my cousin's a mechanic for a fleet and he swears by 5,000 for everything because their trucks run forever. Different brands and different driving habits change everything too... like if you do mostly short trips or live in a dusty area you're going to need more frequent changes no matter what the manual says.
