Just realized my recycling bin trick was a hoax the whole time

I spent 6 months sorting my trash into this special bin for a local pickup that turned out to be run by a guy who just dumped everything into the same landfill truck... turns out the whole operation was a $40 a month feel-good scam. Now I'm wondering if any of these neighborhood recycling programs are even real, or if we're all just paying to make ourselves feel better... has anyone else caught their 'green' service being fake, or am I the only one who got played this bad?
