Rant: Our main fiber cut at 3am and nobody knew for 4 hours

Had our primary ISP link go down Tuesday morning at 3am for our Chicago office. The monitoring system showed green the whole time because the backup circuit was carrying traffic. I didn't find out until I got in at 7 and noticed latency was junk. Called the ISP and they said the fiber was cut by a construction crew at 2:45am and nobody bothered to check the backup was saturated. Has anyone else had a monitoring stack fail to flag a failover situation?

Three years ago I grew a tomato that looked like a human heart

Back in 2021 I had this weird volunteer tomato plant pop up in my compost pile. I just let it grow because I was curious what it would do. Last month I finally got another one that looked exactly like the first one - all lumpy and misshapen with a weird point at the bottom. Last week I cut it open and it had like 4 chambers inside with seeds arranged all weird. Has anyone else had tomatoes come out looking like body parts year after year from the same patch of soil?

My washing machine drain pump died on a Tuesday night and I fixed it for free

Last month my washing machine stopped draining mid cycle and left a puddle on the laundry room floor. I was about to call a repair guy but figured I'd look up the error code first. Turns out it was just a sock stuck in the drain pump filter. I pulled the front panel off, found a little blue sock wrapped around the impeller, and had it running again in 20 minutes. No parts needed, no service call, just some YouTube videos and a screwdriver. Saved myself at least $150 based on what repair quotes go for around here. Has anyone else found a simple fix like this that kept you from dropping cash on a service call?

Picked a free AI voice tool over a paid one and got better results

I needed to generate some voiceovers for a small project last week. I was deciding between a $30 subscription tool and a free open source one called Piper TTS. The paid one sounded smoother at first but the free one let me tweak the speed and pitch way more. Ended up using the free one for all 12 clips and they sounded fine. No regrets about saving the money. Has anyone else tried free voice tools that beat the paid versions?

Tried a reusable grocery bag system for 3 weeks vs plastic bags each trip

I used to just grab plastic bags every time I went to Kroger on my street. Felt guilty but it was convenient. Finally switched to those $2 reusable totes from the checkout aisle and honestly the difference is wild. I've already kept like 30 plastic bags out of the trash in just 21 days. Anyone else find that once you pick one system it just becomes a habit fast?

Hit 100 haircuts in one month and I still don't know how my wrist held up

Last month I did 100 haircuts in 30 days, which is way more than my usual 60 or so. It wasn't planned, it just happened because I had three walk-in heavy Saturdays in a row and a bunch of regulars all booked at once. By the end of the month my forearm felt like it was made of rubber bands and my scissors hand kept cramping up at night. I even had to switch to a lighter pair of shears for the last week just to get through. What surprised me most was that I didn't mess up any cuts from fatigue, but I did forget to charge my clippers twice. Anyone else ever accidentally hit a crazy milestone like that and wonder how your body held up?

Tore down a seized brake caliper at a shop in Tucson and found a simple fix

Last month I was working at a buddy's shop in Tucson when a 2005 Camry came in with a dragging rear brake. The caliper was completely seized, piston wouldn't budge. Instead of just telling the customer to buy a new one for $150, I tried pulling the dust boot and hitting it with penetrating oil and a c-clamp. Managed to free it up in about 20 minutes. Has anyone else had success rebuilding these old calipers instead of swapping them?

I tried two ways to clean calcite crystals and one was a game changer

I had a batch of calcite from a dig in Missouri that was coated in a tough clay. First, I tried soaking them in plain white vinegar for a day, which is what I've always done. It worked, but it left the surface a bit dull and etched. Last week, I switched to a 50/50 mix of water and muriatic acid, but only for about 90 seconds with constant watching. The clay just fell off and the crystal faces stayed perfectly shiny and sharp. The quick dip made all the difference. Has anyone else found a better acid or method for really delicate calcites?

Absolutely, I do that all the time. Last month I lost my car keys for almost an hour, and in the process I found a $20 bill I forgot about, an old gift card that still had like $12 on it, and a really cool lighter I thought I'd lost years ago. Makes me wonder how many games hide important stuff in the weirdest places just to keep us hunting. I swear half the time I'm not even mad anymore, I just get curious about what else I might stumble across. It's like the universe is trying to reward me for being so scatterbrained.
