PSA: That grainy 1972 moon landing clip my uncle showed me at a family BBQ in Ohio is why I stopped trusting buzzfeed videos
Back around 2009 at my uncle Ray's place outside Dayton, he pulled out this beat up VHS tape and made the whole family watch the Apollo footage frame by frame. He kept pausing on the flag and saying look at the shadow, look at the shadow, and honestly half of us were just there for the burgers. I was 16 and thought he was nuts, but then I went home and started reading forums and watching clips and I realized nobody was actually answering the simple stuff, they just yelled at each other. That summer I probably put in 40 hours digging through old NASA transcripts and grainy uploads, and the weird thing is the more I looked the less sure I was about anything. Now I see a 4 minute video on my feed claiming to debunk or prove something and I just scroll past, because I know how easy it is to edit a clip and slap dramatic music on it. Ray passed a few years back and I still think about him every time some new moon hoax thing trends. Where did you all first get pulled into this stuff, was it a person or just something you stumbled on online?
My dad had a binder of printed NASA transcripts he kept in the garage, and every time a moon thing came on TV he'd haul it out and make us sit there while he flipped pages. The trick that actually helped me was picking ONE claim and chasing it all the way down instead of hopping between 10 videos. Like the flag waving thing, I spent a whole weekend just on that, found the raw footage of the astronaut twisting the pole, and it made sense without anyone yelling at me. Same with the shadows, once you see the actual sun angle and the ground slope in the full photos instead of a cropped screenshot it stops being spooky. The crosshair thing is another one, people zoom in on a low res jpg and swear it's fake, but the originals show them fine. So my advice is go to the source, the full unedited stuff, and skip anything with music and a thumbnail of a red circle.
