Serious question, has anyone else noticed how airport security changed after 9/11 in just one specific way?
I flew out of Chicago O'Hare in August 2001 and then again in October 2001 and the difference was like day and night - went from barely glancing at my bag to having a guy in a blue glove dig through every pocket of my carry-on for 10 minutes, and I swear it wasn't just the pat-downs but the whole vibe shifted to suspicion in an instant, so what exactly caused that rapid change besides the obvious?

You mentioned how the whole vibe shifted to suspicion, and that's what gets me. Was it really just the new rules that did it, or was it more about the TSA being created from scratch and having something to prove? I mean, those first few months after October 2001 felt like every screener was trying to catch someone red-handed to justify their job. Idk, maybe it's just me but I remember a guy at LAX literally asking me why I owned a paperback copy of The Hobbit like it was suspicious.

LAX pulled me aside once for having a tube of garlic paste in my bag. They swabbed it for explosives like it was a bomb or something. That's when I realized it was just about looking busy, not being smart.
