A client's kid asked me if I could make her hair 'look like a unicorn barfed glitter'
I was doing a simple trim for a mom yesterday when her little girl, maybe 5 years old, pointed at my color swatch book. She said she wanted her whole head to look like a unicorn barfed glitter, with all the colors mixed together. I had to explain that we couldn't do that today, but it got me thinking about creative color requests. How do you all handle those wild, impossible ideas from clients, especially kids? Do you have a gentle way to steer them toward something more doable?

Oh man, "unicorn barfed glitter" is a whole new level of hair description! I usually just tell kids that my magic color potions are taking a nap today and can't do the super sparkly stuff. Maybe we could try some fun clips instead? It's all about turning the "no" into a different kind of yes.

Turning the "no" into a different yes is a solid move, @the_ryan. I'm still working on my own version, which usually ends with me covered in craft glitter.

That glitter situation sounds all too familiar. My niece once described my gray streak as a "storm cloud hiding in my hair," which was way more poetic than I deserved for just skipping the dye that month. Finding a fun alternative really does save the day, even if it's just colorful hair bands or letting them pick a temporary tattoo. Kids come up with the best images for things we see as ordinary.
