Tried budget flat irons vs my usual mid-range one and oof

My usual $150 flat iron kicked the bucket last Tuesday so I grabbed a $25 one from the drugstore to get by. It took me like 4 passes on each section to get the same smoothness I normally get in one. By the time I finished my client's hair, I could smell the plates getting weird and her ends looked fried. Has anyone else had a cheap tool totally mess up their timing and results like that?

4 passes on each section" and "smelled weird" is basically the budget flat iron starter pack, right? Nothing says "value" like the faint scent of burning plastic and regret.

Mine had a burning rubber smell that got stronger with each pass.
