Liebherr load chart argument at the Sioux Falls yard, who's right here?
Had a real disagreement with another operator at the Sioux Falls yard last Tuesday over whether boom deflection should change how you read a load chart. He says you always trust the chart to the pound, I say once you're past 80 feet of radius on a 200 ton, that boom is flexing enough that the number on paper and the number at the hook are not the same animal. We went back and forth for 40 minutes and never settled it. Now I'm second guessing every pick where I'm anywhere near 75 percent capacity. So which side are you on, chart is gospel or chart is just a starting point?
You think the chart is just a suggestion, so where does it end? The chart already factors in boom flex, that is why there are different ratings for different boom lengths and why they publish stability limits separate from structural ones. If every operator started subtracting their own feel factor for deflection, you would have a hundred guys running a hundred different charts and no two picks would look the same. The manual gives you a hard line for a reason, and if you are that worried at 75 percent, the answer is more counterweight or a bigger crane, not guessing at the math.
