Lifted a beam wrong at a Philly job site and almost dropped it on the foreman
I was working a site near 30th Street Station in Philly last fall, and we had this massive steel beam that needed to go up about 60 feet. I thought I could save time by skipping the tagline and relying on my swing, but the wind caught it sideways and the load started twisting bad. The foreman yelled at me from below, and I had to cut the lift and reset everything. Has anyone else had a close call like that from skipping standard rigging gear?

Play the devil's advocate here - taglines are crutches, not safety equipment. I've been on sites from Newark to Baltimore where guys over-rely on rigging gear because they never learned how to read a load's sway in real time. That beam twist you felt? Could have been corrected with a quick counter-swing and a ladder chock if you had your hands free instead of tangled in a tagline. I skip taglines on 80% of my lifts above 40 feet because they create more problems than they solve - snagging on rebar, getting pinched in the block, or throwing off your balance when the wind hits. The foreman yelling at you was probably more about his own liability than any real danger since you made the right call cutting the lift. Trade the tagline for a second spotter and learn to work the load from the crane seat instead.
