Old timer's load chart tip saved my butt on a tight pick

Guy with 30 years on a 150 ton told me to stop eyeballing the chart and actually write out the math for every lift, even simple ones, so I tried it on a 12,000 lb beam job last Thursday and caught a radius error I would've missed by 4 feet. Anyone else got a habit they picked up from a veteran that feels slow but somehow makes every shift smoother?
