Saw a 300 ton Liebherr pick a bridge girder in Pittsburgh and the counterweight setup blew my mind
I was driving through Pittsburgh last month and had to pull over on the shoulder because there was a huge pick happening over the Allegheny. They had a 300 ton Liebherr set up with full counterweight, and I mean full, all the way to the max. What got me was the cribbing under the outriggers. They had these thick timber mats stacked about four high on one side because the ground sloped down toward the river. I sat there for maybe 20 minutes watching the rigger signal the operator in on a 90 foot bridge girder, and the boom barely flexed at all. The whole thing was smooth as glass. I run a 60 ton Grove every day so this was like watching a different sport. Has anyone here ever worked a pick with that much counterweight on soft or sloped ground? I want to know how you figure out the mat stacking before you even set up.
