Snapped a boom pin on a 60 ton at the Port of Tacoma, and a 30 year vet taught me something about grease
Had a rough one Tuesday morning at the Port of Tacoma, we were setting a precast panel and I heard this pop that I felt more than heard, right through my seat. Crawled out and the boom pivot pin on our 60 ton had sheared clean off, 2 inch pin, just gone. We had to shut the whole pour down for 6 hours while the rental crane got there, and the super was not happy. Guys were standing around and one of the old timers, name's Dale, he walks up and asks me when I last greased the pivot points. I said we hit them every week like the book says. He laughed and said the book was written for a crane running 40 hours a week, ours runs 70, and grease does not care about your schedule, it cares about heat cycles. I never thought about it like that, we were basically running a maintenance plan built for half the work we actually do. So now I'm wondering, are you guys going off the manual intervals or do you shorten them for heavy use? Dale said he went to 2 days a week on pivot points pulling double shifts down in Long Beach and never lost a pin again.
