Just hit draft #100 of my cabin book and most of it is garbage
I started writing this thing about my grandpa's cabin up near Ely, Minnesota back in 2019 and last night I saved file number 100. Not 100 pages, 100 drafts. Some of them are just a paragraph I rewrote twenty times, some are whole chapters I threw out the next morning. When I was a kid I figured writers just sat down and the good stuff came out, but my first 40 drafts read like a guy filling out a police report. The weird part is I can trace exactly when it got better, and it was draft 63, when I stopped trying to sound like some fancy memoir guy and just wrote how my grandpa actually talked, cussing and all. The pile of bad versions is honestly the only reason the current one works. Any of you keep the old drafts around or do you delete them so nobody ever sees the ugly stuff?
