Just realized my best writing comes out when I type it on my phone in one sitting
Everyone on here keeps preaching about outlines, multiple drafts, and letting stuff sit in a drawer for a month. I did all that for a 1200 word story about my dad's old truck and it came out flat and dead. Last Tuesday I was stuck waiting at the DMV in Boise for 90 minutes with no signal, so I just opened the notes app and typed the whole thing straight through on my phone, no outline, no stopping to fix anything. It had errors everywhere, the tense flipped around, and I spelled carburetor three different ways, but my wife read it and said it was the first thing I wrote that sounded like a human. I think all that polishing up front kills the voice before it even shows up. The messy version had stuff in it I never would have planned, like a line about the smell of the bench seat that I only remembered while typing. So now I'm starting to think the real advice should be write it ugly first on whatever you have handy, then fix it later. Anyone else find their phone is where their first draft actually lives, or am I just weird about this?
