My writing teacher said to write drunk and edit sober, but she meant it literally
She actually told our workshop group in Austin last spring to have a glass of wine before drafting so we'd stop self-editing every sentence. I tried it on my short story and came back the next morning to eight pages of rambling about a lighthouse, but two lines in there were better than anything I'd written sober all month. Curious if anyone else writes messy on purpose or if that's just me making excuses.
