Eavesdropped on a barista's story and now I want to write it
I was sitting in a coffee shop on Tuesday and heard this older guy telling his friend about how he spent 40 years as a lighthouse keeper off the Oregon coast, and he described one night when a storm knocked out all the power and he had to climb the tower with a flashlight every 20 minutes. My first thought was that it would make an amazing short story, but I'm worried about taking a real person's life and turning it into fiction without permission. Has anyone else built a piece off something they overheard, and how do you decide where the line is between inspiration and just stealing someone's story?
