Watched a stranger pull prompts from a diner sugar packet at 2am in Austin and it fixed my writer's block
I was sitting at a 24 hour diner on Burnet Road last month, stuck on a short story I'd been dragging around for 3 weeks. The guy in the next booth was scribbling on the back of a receipt, and when he got up to pay he left it behind. I know that's nosy, but I looked. He had written 4 prompts pulled straight from stuff around him, like the waitress's name tag and a broken neon sign outside. I copied his idea that night and now I keep a running list of 10 prompts pulled from whatever room I'm in. Last Tuesday I got a whole draft out of a prompt about a ceiling fan that clicks at 3 speeds. My normal method was waiting for some big idea to hit, which mostly meant waiting. Anybody here use found stuff from real life as prompt fuel, or does it feel like cheating to you?
