That 2FA advice from a random Reddit thread probably saved my login

I saw a tip in a thread about turning on two-factor auth for my email, not my bank or anything fancy. The guy said to use an authenticator app, not SMS, because SIM swapping is a real thing. Last week I got a weird text about my phone number being transferred, and sure enough, someone tried to reset my password. The app code blocked it, and my carrier confirmed the swap attempt came from a store in Tulsa. Has anyone else had a close call like this, or do you still stick with text codes because they're easier?
