Tried a YubiKey on a whim last month and now I feel dumb for waiting so long
I always thought hardware keys were overkill for a regular person like me. Just seemed like something for IT pros and crypto bros. Then my bank account got hit with a $47 charge from a gas station in Dallas three weeks ago. Nothing huge but it scared me. I had reused the same password on like six sites because who keeps track of all that. So I grabbed a YubiKey for $45 and set it up on my email and banking. Took about 20 minutes total. I expected it to be annoying, having to plug it in every time. Turns out it's actually faster than typing a code from my phone. The part that really got me was when I ran a check on my old passwords afterward. Two of them showed up in known breach lists going back 4 years. I had no clue. Now I just keep the key on my car keys. The one thing I'm still figuring out is what happens if I lose the thing. Anyone here set up a backup key yet? Not sure if I need two or if the backup codes are enough.
