A guy at the Tacoma knife show sharpened my $18 gas station folder and now I carry it every day
I went to the knife show in Tacoma back in March mostly to look at fixed blades I can't afford, and there was this older guy at a small table with just a water stone and a leather strop. He saw me fidgeting with the cheap folder I keep clipped to my jeans, the one I bought at a gas station for $18 two winters ago, and he asked to see it. I figured he was going to make fun of it, but he just took it apart with a little torx driver, cleaned out about a year of pocket lint, and spent maybe 10 minutes on the stone and strop. When he handed it back the thing would push cut receipt paper and it locked up tighter than when it was new. He told me most cheap knives fail because people never clean or touch up the edge, not because the steel is bad, and that line stuck with me. I went home and put a little bottle of honing oil and a cheap ceramic rod in my bag, and now I touch up the edge every Sunday night while I watch TV. I still want a nicer knife someday but this one does everything I need, opening boxes, cutting fruit, trimming paracord. Does anyone else here keep a beater that outcuts their nicer stuff, or am I the only one who got talked into loving a gas station knife?
