Two knife sharpening setups, one broke my brain for two weeks
Okay so I've been carrying a folding knife for about 6 years now and I finally decided to get serious about keeping it sharp. I went back and forth between a guided rod system and a simple bench stone, and I read probably 40 forum threads before picking the bench stone. The guided system felt more foolproof but the stone is way more packable, so I grabbed a 1000/6000 combo for $35. First month was rough, I gouged the edge twice and almost gave up, but by week 5 I could get a clean shave off the 6000 side in about 10 minutes. Now I'm second guessing myself though, because a guy at my local shop in Portland showed me his guided setup and the edge looked way more even than mine. Anyone here actually ditched the rods for a stone and regretted it, or is freehand just something you have to suffer through?
Ha, I spent my first two months just making my knife duller in new and creative ways, so you're already ahead of me. Freehand is one of those things where the guy with the rods will always have a prettier edge, but mine fits in my pocket, so I'll keep crying about it.
