Guy wire tension specs from the 80s are actually looser than I thought

Pulled the old manual for a 12V71 genset last month and found the factory says 1/4 inch deflection on the alternator belt, but every shop I've worked at runs them guitar-string tight, so which is it, has anyone actually measured theirs against the book and seen a real failure either way?
