Why does nobody talk about the injector sleeve o-ring trick on the 6.0?
When I started turning wrenches at a truck stop outside Amarillo in the late 90s, old timers would pull a sleeve with a slide hammer and a wet rag, no special tools. Now everyone online says you need a $400 kit and a press, and guys are yanking heads for jobs that should take an afternoon. The trick is packing grease under the sleeve so the o-ring slides instead of rolling, and I have done maybe 30 of them that way with zero comebacks. Took me two years to figure out why my first one leaked, and it was the o-ring rolling on dry aluminum the whole time. Anyone still doing these by hand or is everybody on the tool truck plan now?
How much grease are you packing in there, just enough to wet the bore or are you filling the whole gap under the sleeve? The reason I ask is I tried the grease deal once and it worked fine on a cold block but I always wondered what happens on a hot motor in August when that stuff thins out and runs. Seems like the o-ring has to hold either way, so maybe the real trick is just keeping it from grabbing on the way down.
