A gallery owner in Chicago said my shadows looked like mud, so I tried a hard light study for 30 days
Last month I showed my digital portrait series to a gallery owner in Chicago and she said my shadows looked like mud. I was using soft brushes and a low opacity airbrush for everything. She told me to try hard light for a month straight. I set up a daily practice of painting one object with a single hard light source, no soft brushes at all. The first week looked terrible. By day 30 the difference was clear. My shadows had shape and direction instead of just being gray smudges. Now I use hard light for my base and only soften edges where it makes sense. How do you handle shadows in your digital work?
