Pro tip: I was flattening skin tones with pure black for a year
I've been doing digital portraits in Clip Studio for about 3 years and always wondered why my shadows looked muddy and dead compared to artists I follow. Last week I was watching a stream from an artist in Toronto and she pulled up her color picker to show her shadow color, it was a deep warm purple, not black at all. I tried swapping my shadow layer to a dark plum color and the whole face suddenly looked alive, like actual skin instead of a gray mask. Now I'm going back through 12 finished pieces wondering how many I need to fix. Anyone else have a color habit they had to unlearn the hard way?
12 finished pieces is rough, but at least you caught it before hitting 50. Meanwhile I'm over here still using straight black on my line art like a caveman. Welcome to the warm shadow club, your skin tones will never ghost you again.
