PSA: the week my best piece got 4 likes and my 20 minute doodle blew up, and I still can't figure out which one deserved it
Two weeks ago I posted a piece I worked on for 11 days, a full scene with a lighthouse and storm clouds, probably 30 hours into it total. It got 4 likes and my mom was one of them. Then last Thursday I got stuck waiting on a fencing quote in the truck for 40 minutes, so I scribbled a dumb little frog on a skateboard in Procreate to pass the time, posted it that night, and it's sitting at 2,300 likes right now. I'm not even mad, I'm just confused. Part of me thinks the quick one hit because people could tell I wasn't overthinking every brush stroke, and part of me thinks the algorithm just does whatever it wants and skill has nothing to do with it. My friend Jenna says the frog worked because it reads instantly on a phone screen while my lighthouse turns into mush at thumbnail size, which honestly might be the real answer. So here's my question for everyone: do you chase the stuff that pops off even if it's not your best work, or do you keep grinding on the big pieces and just accept they'll get ignored? I want to hear from people who've been at this longer than me.
