My client's Google Ads account got hit with a $2,100 bill in 3 days because I forgot one setting
I set up a search campaign for a plumber in Phoenix two weeks ago and left the display network box checked by default, which I didn't catch until his card got charged $2,100 for junk clicks from kids clicking game ads. The calls dried up to zero while the spend tripled, so I paused everything on a Friday night and rebuilt the whole thing with display and partners turned off from the start. Do you all build from scratch or copy an old campaign to skip this trap?
The "copy an old campaign to skip this trap" idea is where I have to disagree. Copying a campaign copies all its settings too, and if the old one had display partners on, guess what you just carried over? I have seen people clone a winning campaign and inherit the same junk placements without knowing it. Building fresh takes 10 extra minutes and forces you to actually look at every box before you launch. The real fix is a launch checklist you run every single time, not hoping a copied campaign remembers to protect you.
