Went to a city council meeting in Fort Wayne about sidewalk ramps and it flipped how I think about advocacy
I showed up to a council meeting in Fort Wayne two weeks ago because they were voting on whether to fix 40 broken curb ramps on the north side. What got me was a woman named Denise who uses a chair and said she has been asking for one ramp near her pharmacy for 3 years, and the council members kept nodding but nobody wrote anything down. Do you all think showing up in person still works, or is filing formal complaints with the ADA the only thing that actually gets a city to move?

Three years of asking and they just nodded? That is wild to me. Like nobody even had the common sense to grab a pen and write it down so they could follow up later. That woman is out here doing everything right, showing up, talking to them face to face, and they treat her like background noise. Makes you wonder how many other people in that same spot just gave up because the whole thing felt pointless. Showing up should matter more than paperwork, but clearly in Fort Wayne it does not always shake out that way.
