Pro tip: went with the $25 chain tool over the $8 one and my hands thanked me
Snapped a chain on the Minnehaha trail 3 weeks ago and the cheap tool kept slipping the pin off center, so I finally bought the Park Tool CT-3.3 and it pushed through in one clean shot, no bent links. Anyone got a trick for holding the chain steady on the trail when you don't have a third hand?
Bought the same CT-3.3 after fighting a no name tool for way too long. Mine kept bending pins and I ended up mashing a link so bad I had to cut it out and use a quick link just to get home. The Park Tool was night and day, one push and done. For holding the chain on the trail, I hook the chain over a stick or a pedal and let the derailleur hold some tension, then push the pin with one hand and steady the tool with the other. If it is really being a pain, I thread a zip tie through a link and around the frame to keep it from flopping while I work. Not pretty but it beats chasing a pin through the dirt for ten minutes.
