Stripped pedal threads ate my whole Saturday

Went to swap pedals on my old mountain bike and the crank arm threads stripped clean off, like butter. Took me 6 hours, three trips to the hardware store, and a helicoil kit from Ace in Portland to fix it. Turns out the pedal had been cross-threaded by a previous owner and I made it worse by forcing it. Anyone else deal with stripped crank threads, or is that just my luck with used bikes?
