That $10 chain checker saved me from a $150 cassette

I mean I've been riding the same chain for like 2 years and never thought about stretch, just kept greasing it. Got one of those cheap wear gauges at the hardware store last weekend and the red side slid right in, chain was toast. Put a new one on but the damage was done, old chain wore the cassette teeth down to points and it skips under power now. If you ride more than 50 miles a week, grab a $10 chain checker before you learn this the expensive way. Anyone else here find out about chain stretch the hard way?
