That guy at the co-op who made me rethink my brake cable routing

Last month I was at the Bike Kitchen on 12th Ave and this older fella, Dan, watched me run a new rear brake cable under the top tube. He said, 'You know, that's fine, but I've seen more pinches from that route than any crash.' He showed me how to zip-tie it along the downtube instead, took maybe 10 minutes. I've done 30 or so cable swaps over the years and never once thought about chafing wear. Has anyone else had a random shop regular point out something basic that totally rewired your setup?
