My 15 year old drill finally gave out mid-assembly

I was putting together a new monitor stand arm last Tuesday and the chuck on my old cordless drill just stopped gripping, it was the same one I used to build this whole desk back in 2009. After fumbling with a screwdriver for 45 minutes I just bought a cheap $35 drill from the hardware store down the road, and honestly it works fine but it feels like I'm cheating on an old friend. Has anyone else had a trusted tool die on them at the worst moment, and did you replace it with something basic or splurge for the good stuff?
