Warning: spent $180 on a standing desk converter and my back hurt more after 8 months
Everyone pushes sit-stand converters as the fix for back pain, but mine in my Toledo apartment actually made things worse. I tracked it for 8 months (Jan to Aug) and my lower back pain went from 2 days a month to 5 days a month. The problem was I'd stand for 3 hours straight instead of breaking it up, and the converter wobbled enough that I was tensing up without knowing it. Sold it on Marketplace for $90 and went back to a fixed desk with a $30 footrest. Anyone else find that standing more didn't actually help their back?
The part about tensing up without knowing it really hits home. I read a thing from a PT once that said the wobble is the real killer with those converters, because your body is constantly making tiny balance moves and you don't feel it until later. Same deal with standing 3 hours straight, your back likes movement, not just being locked in one spot whether that's sitting or standing. There's some research out there that says the best setup is switching every 30 minutes or so, not doing long stretches either way. Sounds like the footrest plus a fixed desk is honestly the smarter move for you.
