Vent: Had to choose between a $200 pre-made kitchen island or building one from scratch.
My old place in Austin had zero counter space, so I spent a weekend building a basic pine island with some 2x4s and a plywood top for about $75 total. It's not perfect, but it holds all my pans and I actually use it every day. Would you guys usually buy something ready-made or take the time to build it yourself?

My buddy's homemade island has these perfect little notches for his cutting boards. That kind of specific solution is what you can't buy.

Buying feels like a game of roulette with quality. Building means you get exactly what your space needs. That pine island fixed your problem way better than some overpriced particle board.

That built-in sense of pride is a real thing people forget. Slapping together some lumber means you'll always look at that island and remember making it work. A store-bought piece is just furniture, but something you built fixes the exact problem you had. That custom fit for your pans beats a perfect finish any day.
