Spent $60 on a breadboard kit and half the parts were junk

Ordered one of those starter breadboard kits with resistors and ICs for a fuzz build, but the potentiometers were so scratchy they made my signal sound like a dying radio. I ended up buying replacements at a local shop for $18 and the kit sits in a drawer now. Anyone else had luck with specific brands of budget pots, or should I just accept the cost of good ones?
