Watched a guy blow a speaker at a basement show and it changed how I test my builds
Last month I was at a friend's basement show in Cleveland and the bass player's amp started making this awful crackle, then popped and went dead mid song. Turns out he'd pushed it too hard with no limiter and cooked the voice coil. Standing there watching him panic, I realized I'd been testing my own little amp builds only at quiet bedroom levels and never at the volume they'd actually get played at. The next day I ran my last build for 20 minutes at full tilt into a cheap old cab I don't care about, and sure enough a solder joint on the power section got hot enough to start browning. Anyone else test their stuff loud before calling it done, or am I the only one who was babying my builds?
