Rant: hand planes beat sandpaper every time on old oak
Every forum tells you to just sand a reclaimed tabletop smooth, but I grabbed a $35 No. 4 Bailey hand plane from a flea market in Akron 6 months ago and it cut a finish smoother than 220 grit ever did. Sanding just mashed the grain flat and left swirl marks that showed up the second I wiped on stain. The plane took thin curls off and left the grain open so the stain soaked in even. What are you all using for old oak that won't clog, or am I the last guy sharpening a blade at 1am?
