I spent 4 weeks fighting surface noise on my lathe cuts and kept blaming my stylus, then a guy at a swap meet in Akron told me to damp the platter with felt. Cut one test disc with the pad under the blank and the hiss dropped off a cliff. Anyone else damping their setup with cheap stuff instead of buying new gear?
