TIL the record shop in Fargo has a lathe in the back and let me watch a full side get cut
I was in Fargo visiting my sister two weeks ago and stopped into a little shop downtown that sells used records. Halfway through flipping through the jazz bin I heard a weird hum from behind a curtain, so I asked the guy at the counter what it was. He pulled the curtain back and showed me a small lathe set up on a workbench, and he was actually in the middle of cutting a one-off 12 inch side for a local band. I stood there for maybe 25 minutes just watching him watch the groove go by, and he explained how he sets the depth so the needle doesn't jump on loud parts. He also let me hold a fresh cut dub plate, which was warm and way heavier than I expected for something with no label on it. I went home that night and started pricing out a basic setup for my own place, and I am shocked at how cheap some of the entry level options are. Has anybody here cut a full side on a lathe at home without wrecking the first five attempts?
