Took me 11 months to figure out why my lathe cuts sounded fuzzy, and it was my kitchen table
I've been cutting records on a little Presto lathe in my apartment since January, and every single groove came out sounding fuzzy no matter how slow I fed the stylus or how sharp my cutting needle was. I bought a new needle, switched blanks twice, and even tried reheating the plastic with a hair dryer after reading some old forum post from 2009. Last weekend my downstairs neighbor knocked and asked what was vibrating through her ceiling, and that's when it hit me: my table sits right over her fridge, and the hum was riding into the cut. I moved the lathe onto a $25 concrete paver from the hardware store in my building's courtyard, and the very next test cut came out clean on the first try. Has anyone else dealt with floor vibration like this, and did you ever figure out a cheap way to isolate it without a whole workbench setup?
